Application Engineer – Mining Training & Simulation
At Blue Box Talent, we are looking for an Application Engineer – Mining Training & Simulation to support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of simulator-based training programs for mining operations across North America.
We are seeking a highly hands-on professional who combines mining or heavy equipment knowledge, training expertise, and technical capability to develop effective operator training programs. This role will work directly with mining clients to identify performance and competency gaps, design training pathways, configure simulator scenarios, and ensure measurable improvements in operator performance.
This position requires someone who is not only a trainer and not only an engineer, but a professional capable of understanding mine-site operations, translating operational needs into structured training programs, integrating simulation technology and performance analytics, and working closely with mine managers and training teams.
The position should be based in or near Salt Lake City, Utah, or Tucson, Arizona, and requires approximately 50% travel across North America.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement simulator-based training curricula for new and inexperienced operators, experienced operators, remedial training, and competency development programs.
- Develop learning pathways, lesson plans, simulator scenarios, competency assessments, and performance benchmarks aligned with site-specific operational requirements.
- Configure simulator scenarios that replicate real-world mining conditions and develop targeted exercises and event-based training scenarios.
- Conduct Training Needs Analyses to identify operator competency and performance gaps and translate findings into structured development programs.
- Establish assessment methodologies, pass/fail criteria, performance benchmarks, and evaluation standards to measure operator competency.
- Ensure simulator exercises effectively measure and develop the operational behaviors required by each mining site.
- Develop training workflows aligned with site procedures, operating standards, safety requirements, and workforce capability objectives.
- Integrate digital learning solutions, cloud-based Operator Performance Analytics, autonomous operations content, and other technology products into training programs.
- Review and incorporate new software features and product capabilities into existing training content and curricula.
- Identify product or technology gaps during implementation and escalate opportunities for product improvement.
- Develop trainer guides, Train-the-Trainer materials, implementation documentation, and curriculum review recommendations.
- Train and coach site trainers to ensure sustainable implementation and consistent delivery of training programs.
- Partner with mine managers, operational leaders, and training departments to develop workforce capability strategies and demonstrate measurable operational improvement.
- Collaborate with global Professional Services teams to ensure scalable, repeatable delivery and a consistent client experience.
Requirements
- Professional experience in mining operations, workforce development, simulator training, operational excellence, or technical training.
- Previous experience as a Simulator Instructor, Trainer, Training Coordinator, Training Superintendent, Application Engineer, or similar role.
- Hands-on knowledge of mining equipment and/or mining operations is highly desirable.
- Experience developing training curricula, learning pathways, competency assessments, and structured training programs.
- Experience with simulator-based training environments and technology strongly preferred.
- Engineering, Mine Engineering, Education, Instructional Design, or related degree preferred; equivalent relevant professional experience will also be considered.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies is preferred.
- Ability to analyze operational and performance data and translate findings into targeted training and improvement initiatives.
- Strong facilitation, coaching, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to consult directly with mine managers, operational leaders, and training departments regarding workforce capability and operator performance.
- Strong technical aptitude and ability to configure and integrate technology into training environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Availability to travel approximately 50% across North America.
- Ability to work in a field-based role supporting mining clients.
- Must be located or willing to relocate in or near Salt Lake City, Utah, or Tucson, Arizona.
